Documents Required

You must bring ALL of the following
  • International Driving Permit (IDP) — Geneva Convention format
  • Your original driver's license from your home country
  • Passport
Important: An IDP alone is NOT sufficient. You must also present your original home country driver's license and passport at pick-up.

IDP Requirements

Geneva Convention

Japan only accepts IDPs issued under the 1949 Geneva Convention on Road Traffic. Check with your local automobile association.

Validity Period

Your IDP must be valid at the time of rental. IDPs are typically valid for 1 year from the date of issue.

Special Cases

Drivers from Taiwan, Switzerland, Germany, France, Belgium, Monaco, Estonia

Drivers from these countries/regions may use an official Japanese translation of their license instead of an IDP. The translation must be issued by the respective embassy/consulate in Japan or by JAF (Japan Automobile Federation).

Drivers with a Japanese License

If you hold a valid Japanese driver's license, no IDP is needed. Please bring your Japanese license at pick-up.

FAQ

No. In Japan, foreign visitors must have either a valid IDP (Geneva Convention) or an official Japanese translation of their license (for specific countries only), along with their original license and passport.

Contact your local automobile association (such as AAA in the US, AA in the UK, etc.) before traveling to Japan. It usually takes a few days to process.

Unfortunately, we cannot rent a vehicle without valid driving documentation. This is required by Japanese law.
